The weather is warming and my regimen is already changing. This past week will wrap up my hair care diary for Fall 2010-Winter 2011. Time to start transitioning into my Spring regimen.
Sunday
I set my hair in dry twists using Naptural85's method; in total I had about 8 sections twisted.
Monday
During the day I wore a twist out that was set using Naptural85's method and it received tons of compliments. This look is a winner - quick and great results.
Monday evening I did a black tea rinse and deep condition. I can tell it about time to either henna or do a protein treatment so one of those will be coming up soon. After rinsing I finger detangled and did med-sized two strand twists
Tuesday
During the day I wore my two strand twists down and at night massaged my scalp gently with Castor Oil.
Wednesday
I wore my two strand twist up in a high pony and moisturized the exposed ends in the morning and at night with Aloe Gro.
Thursday
I wore a twist out and gently combed through it to increase the fullness of the look.
Friday
No work today (woo hoo!) so I kept my hair pineappled for most of the day. In the evening I attended an Erykah Badu concert and attempted to make my hair as big and full as possible. Friday night I pineappled again.
Saturday
I finger combed my hair out and was able to get a 3rd day out of the twist-out.
*Twist-out pics will be in the post following this one.

Fall/Winter - Week 16
Sunday
I co-washed, deep conditioned, and twisted my hair into an updo.
An updo is such easy maintenance that most of the care for the week consisted just keeping the hair moisturized.
Wednesday
I oiled my scalp with Castor oil and massaged as much as I could without causing too much frizz.
Friday
I took down the updo and washed my hair. I was so tired but so in need of a wash that simply shampooed and then went back to my old school technique of twisting my hair with Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner.
Saturday
The weather was nice and I had some errands to run so I decided to have a little fun with my hair and wear it out:
The hair shot was perfect - facial expression not so much, LOL. I did this twist out using a method posted on YouTube by Naptural85. It was quick and easy.

Fall/Winter - Week 15
Sunday
After the braid-out, I felt like I desperately needed a thorough cleanse because I had product on top of product. I followed this routine: Wash Day and then put my hair into two strand twists
Monday & Tuesday
Moisturized my hair each morning and night with aloe gro.
Wednesday
Massaged my scalp with Castor oil and then steamed my hair with the Huetiful Steamer.
Thursday & Friday
Moisturized my hair each morning and night with aloe gro.
Saturday
Took apart my twist strand twists but did not fluff. I left them as they were for a more defined look and clipped my hair up into a semi-updo.
Saturday night - I wanted to shampoo and DC but...it was late, I cleaned the entire house today, and I was just tired. No wash for me.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 14
Sunday
Deep conditioned and did a black tea rinse with Giovanni SAS. Rinsed with cold water, applied a leave-in conditioner and did two strand twists with Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie.Monday
Spritz my scalp and length with Aloe Gro and then applied coconut oil to seal.Tuesday
Repeat of Monday.Wednesday
Wednesday morning the twists were removed for a twist-out. In the evening co-washed with HE HH and put my hair into a wet bun. Before bunning I applied a leave-in conditioner and sealed with shea butter.Thursday & Friday
No maintenance needed. Buns make life so easy. The only thing that I did was loosen the elastic band, that held my hair in place, on Friday nightSaturday
We had dinner plans so I just released the bun completely for a bun-out. When we returned that night I did a few individual braids for a braid out on Sunday. Braid-outs with individual braids are quick and easy but I am not a fan of them. I never like the outcome.| Two-strand Twists |

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 13
Sunday
I was finally able to get some time to shampoo, deep condition, and steam my hair after removing the yarn braids. I shampooed with Giovanni Smooth As Silk (SAS) shampoo, deep conditioned with Giovanni SAS conditioner, and sat under the steamer for 15 minutes. Instead of pulling my hair back into a bun, I wanted to enjoy the "free hair" feeling for a day or two so I put about 6 two strand twists in my hair using SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie.
Monday
In the morning I untwisted each section and fluffed. The outside air was not as dry because it rained a little here - this was perfect timing to have my hair out. On Monday night I re-twisted each section because I worked out without properly pulling my hair up.
Tuesday
Tuesday morning was a repeat of Monday morning. It's been a while since I have styled my hair each morning and I forgot that it is not always time consuming. Tuesday night I decided to co-wash my hair so that I could pull it back into a bun for the rest of the week. I used Suave Naturals Aloe Vera and Ginseng to co-wash and applied a leave-in conditioner afterwards. To slick my hair back into the bun the only product I used was shea butter.
Wednesday - Thursday
Wearing a bun requires very little maintenance. Since I did a damp bun (bunned my hair while still wet) I did not have to moisturize the ends at night. The only thing to do at night was put on my head scarf.
Friday
Friday night I set my hair in some two strand twists and flat twists for an "out" style for Saturday's meet-up.
Saturday
I wore my twist out to the meet-up and then reset the style at night for Sunday. The look received a lot of compliments and questions so I did a brief tutorial on how I achieved the look, it will be posted later this week.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 12
I started out this week SLACK because I was looking forward to removing the yarn braids. I did oil and steam my scalp but I didn't put much effort towards any type of style for the week.
Sunday and Wednesday
I oiled my scalp lightly with Castor oil and sat under the steamer. This became one of my favorite things to do with the braids.
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
It took me Thursday evening, Friday evening, and all of Saturday to get the braids completely removed. I was hoping to have the braids removed in time for me to shampoo and deep condition my hair - it didn't happen. It was late, my hands were cramping, and I was tired.
As far as length retention is concerned, I did not measure my length before braiding but I could tell by the roots that I gained ½" - 1" of growth all over. Some areas displayed more growth than others and that is a characteristic of my hair that I have come to expect.
Full yarn braid review coming...stay tuned!

Yarn Braids
Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 11
It's been about a month now and the yarn braids are still in place. I was hoping to take them out on Jan 15 but due to situations beyond my control I was unable to do what I wanted. The braids are not looking bad, I just miss my hair and I know the shed hairs are just piling up. The removal and wash day will be interesting to say the least. My plan for removing the braids is to apply a lot of conditioner to the braids in sections and try to get the braids to slide out. I will report back if this was a success or failure.
My routine is a repeat of the past few weeks. Yarn braids would be perfect for a vacation or to have if you know you will have a very busy few weeks ahead.
Sunday and Wednesday
Castor oil was applied to my scalp lightly oil and then I sat under the steamer for about 20 minutes.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
I am continuing to spray my scalp each morning and night with Aloe Gro to moisturize. I am also continuing to focus some attention on the length of my hair with the aloe gro to retain some moisture on the ends of my hair.and spritzed it lightly to prevent my ends from drying out.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 10
The yarn braids are now starting on week 3....
Week 10's routine was very similar to week 9. The yarn braids have allowed me to have a very consistent and a very simple simple hair care regimen. The main thing that I am careful about is keeping my scalp moisturized. I also spray some aloe gro on the length of my braids to add some daily moisture to the parts of my hair that are in the braids.

I am steaming twice this week and the feeling it great. I can't wait to use this on my hair without the braids.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 9
Having yarn braids has made my hair care so simple and easy. The only problem is that I can't stop playing with the braids. I have developed HIH (hand in hair) with the braids - I never thought it would be a problem.

I oiled my scalp lightly with Castor oil and sat under the steamer.

I ended up steaming twice this week and both times it felt great. I am assuming that the steam treatments will be key in keeping my hair moisturized while in braids.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 8
Most of this week was spent installing my very first set of yarn braids. They are posted in the blog entry just before this one. I am loving them and I am already planning on doing them again. I want to leave them in for about a month so that means I will be setting aside a weekend at the end of January to take them out.
Sunday
Monday-Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday-Saturday
My hair was in a bun from my Saturday wash. I decided that evening to start on the yarn braids. I separated my hair into sections and started braiding in the back. I moisturized each section of hair with leave-in conditioner before starting the braid. I braided from 6pm-11pm.
My braids were not complete so I wore a hat during the day. I braided from 7pm-11pm each night.
I was determined to finish braiding. I started around 5pm and braided until 3:30am. I believe the reason that the yarn braids took so long for me to install was because I had no idea what I was doing and this was my first time doing braids with something other than my own hair.
Anytime that my scalp felt a little dry I would spray some Aloe Gro onto my scalp. It's so cool and refreshing that I started spraying just for the feeling (lol). I got a Huetiful Hair Steamer for Christmas and since I can't wait to use it I will be sitting under it in my braids really soon (review coming).

Thursday-Friday
I was home for 2 days and so there was no need to do my hair. I took my bun down and just kept my hair clipped up.
Saturday
I cowashed my hair with Giovanni SAS and pulled my hair back into another low bun.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 6
Sunday
I co-washed my hair and it felt great! I am falling in love with Giovanni SAS. I styled my hair in a low bun for the week after sealing in leave-in conditioner with shea butter.
Monday-Tuesday
Still bunning it...
Wednesday
The heat in our house has been bumping so that made the air in our house extra dry. As a result, my hair felt really dry and I couldn't take it so I did a mid-week cowash and re-styled my hair back in the bun.
Thursday-Friday
Bunning...
Saturday
I cowashed my hair with Giovanni SAS and did medium two strand twists. I have been alternating between bunning and twists since I have not had time to really sit down and do a bun style that I like.
You can tell by my simple routine this past week that things have been quite busy lately. I have less than one week until I am done with school FOREVER and I can't wait. The regular blog postings will resume and I can get back to doing things I love.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 5
During week 4 I wore my hair in medium sized two strand twists and kept them up in a messy-like bun all week.
Sunday
On Sunday I took down the bun that I put up on Saturday and two strand twisted my hair. The position that the bun was in on Saturday made it hard for me to sleep so, down it came. I did the two strand twists on dry hair using only Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner and Coconut Oil. It took me about 1.5hrs to do the twists
Monday-Friday
I couldn't believe that for the entire week my hair felt moisturized and I did not have to apply any product to my hair at all during the week. I will definitely be using that combo again. It's really something that I did years ago but strayed away from for no good reason. Twisting with conditioner also slows down frizziness with my styles.
Saturday
On Saturday my job had its annual Holiday Party so I took my twists out for a more festive look. If I would have remembered on Sunday that the party was on Friday, I would not have taken down my bun and wore my hair that way all week and to the party. Since I was busy with schoolwork all day on Saturday and then attending the holiday party on Saturday night I was unable to wash and condition my hair. Wash day was moved to Sunday.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 4
For all of week 4 my hair was pulled back into a bun. The bun was originally set while my hair was wet (this is considered 'damp bunning') so as a result, my hair remained moist for about 3 days - my hair holds moisture for quite a while.
Also, since the outdoor and inside air is somewhat dry now this method works great and no, there is never any mildew or sour smell when I do this method. I have heard of this occurring with some individuals but I am not aware of each step of their regimen so I don't have an answer of why the mildew/sour smell happens for some but not for others.
Sunday-Wednesday
Hair was in a bun. The only maintenance was a du-rag at night to keep my edges smooth.
Thursday
Thursday evening I loosened the bun so that I could moisturize the ends of my hair that had gotten dry. I only used some leave-in conditioner on the ends and then immediately styled my hair back into a loose bun.
Friday
Since I would be traveling all day on Saturday, I did my co-wash on Friday night. I used the same method that I mentioned last week (details coming soon). After co-washing I pulled my hair back into a donut bun
Saturday
The bun & du rag at night. Simple maintenance, I love it!
The purpose of my weekly documentation is to keep track of what I am doing with my hair down to every detail so that I will be able to determine the steps that are effective for consistent growth and length retention with my hair. Last year I was able to retain enough length so that my hair was longer than it has ever been. I am curious to see if I can do it again.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 3
When my hair is in an updo protective style, maintenance is so easy and quick. They are perfect for those times in life when you are almost too busy to sleep.
Sunday-Friday
Each night I spritzed my hair with aloe and wrapped with a durag. In the morning I simply removed the durag and went on my way.
Saturday
This weekend was my co-wash week. This time I switched up my technique a little and I love the ease and the results. I am going to try it out a few more times to make sure it was not a fluke before I start raving about it.
It's a holiday week, I still have to work, do some cooking, and complete quite a few major assignments so...I am bunning it.

Sunday - Friday
-Each morning I spritzed my hair with Aloe to keep it moist throughout the day. Since my hair was in a protective style upkeep during the week was simple
-At night I maintained the look by sleeping in a bonnet
Saturday
-This weekend was supposed to be a co-wash weekend but my hair felt icky so I want to shampoo. Hair was pre-pooed for 30 minutes, shampooed once, and then a deep conditioner was applied and left on for 30mins under a plastic cap.
-Another protective style was done for the week.

Thoughts for the week:
This week was exactly how I like my protective styles - no manipulation. I was so great to spray and go each morning and that was such a time saver. Even removing the style was easy because this style did not allow my hair to become tangled during the week. However, after a week of keeping my hair in one place there was A LOT of shedding on wash day. I may start back incorporating the black tea rinses.

Fall/Winter 2010 - Week 1
Week 1 went as follows:
Sunday
-Shampooed, deep conditioned, and styled in two strand twists
Monday
-Wore twist up in a pony with the ends tucked. At night moisturized the ends and sealed lightly with some shea butter
-The ponytail is released each night so that the hair will not become stressed and begin to break
Tuesday
-During the day wore twists up in another ponytail
-In the evening did a light scalp massage with some whipped shea butter, focusing special attention on the crown area because it was a little itchy
Wednesday
-Still wearing hair up in a ponytail with the ends tucked
-Applied shea butter to the ends just before wrapping up for the night
Thursday
-In the morning lightly moisturized the ends with leave-in conditioner, sealed, and styled into another ponytail with the ends tucked
Friday
-During the day wore hair pulled hair into a ponytail with the ends tucks
-In the evening removed two strand twists and let hair rest in huge plaits
Saturday
-Pre-poo for 30mins, Shampoo once(scalp only), deep condition for 30mins, and style while wet in cornrow/twist updo using only shea butter to seal in moisture.
Thoughts for the week:
This week actually involved more manipulation that I like when protective styling. When doing twists I need to try and put them in an updo that I will not have to touch all week but can spritz through out the week to provide moisture.
Also, I would like to move wash day to Saturdays so that I can start the week off with a fresh style.
Random: I wonder if I could stick to protectives styles consistently for one year. Hmmm...

Fall/Winter 2010 Regimen (part 2)
Some of the products I want/plan to experiment/try again this season:
Shampoo:
Giovanni SAS - I have used this once and didn't like the feeling, however I was unable to prepoo before using because I was away from home
Dudu-Osum Liquid Black Soap - this is not an experiment, I am bring this back into my regimen because I have used it and my hair loves it.
Conditioner:
Suave Aloe Vera & Ginseng - Honestly I have used this and I loved it. However, I didn't purchase it again because I had other conditioners that I need to use up before buying more.
Aubrey Organic HoneySuckle Rose - I keep hearing so many good things about this and I am just curious
Deep Conditioner:
Still deliberating...
Stylers:
Koils by Nature Heavenly Delight - my hair simply melts with butters and I love the consistency of the Koils by Nature butters
Other:
Castor Oil
Jasmine Oil
Amla Oil
-I want to incorporate more oils into my overall product rotation and hair regimen so I will be attempting to some how include oil in at least 50% of my regimens from this point forward
The first day of Fall is September 23...I plan to start this reggie around that time.
I am open to any comments, opinions, and/or suggestions about the products list above.

Fall/Winter 2010 Regimen (part 1)
This year's regimen is a slightly tweaked version of last year's regimen. After going back through my posts I realized I have updated my regimens a lot and I am determined to put a stop to all the madness (LOL) and have set in stone regimens. Each I watch the weather forecast they talk about how the humidity and dew-points are decreasing so I know that time is drawing near to implement the Fall/Winter regimen.
Fall/Winter 2010 will go as follows:
1. Cleanse
Co-wash weekly and clarify monthly. Pre-poo before each shampoo.
2. Condition
Deep condition weekly. Except on shampoo week, on those weeks a quick 3-5 minute rinse out conditioner will be used.
3. Moisturize
3. Moisturize
After rinsing and while hair is still damp apply leave-in conditioner and then seal weekly.
