Review: Awapuhi Wild Ginger Shampoo from Paul Mitchell

What is Awapuhi? It's a ginger plant that Paul Mitchell uses to incorporate in his Awapuhi hair care line. I was excited to test their Moisturizing Lather Shampoo made with Keratin protein to strengthen and restore hair. My hair type is oily because of my oily scalp which ends up weighing my hair down. Yet, although it gets oily, the winter dry air is making my hair "dry" & coarse and my scalp can get itchy. It's strange which is why I'm constantly looking for hair products that will suit my hair's mood swings. :)

This shampoo is made for dry, brittle hair and what I love about this is that it doesn't make my hair feel heavy. After washing, it feels effortlessly clean and really moisturized. Plus, no tangles so no need to brush and I don't even use conditioner. The Awapuhi shampoo looks like a thick shaving cream when it came out of the bottle, not liquid-y like other shampoos. I use about a quarter sized amount to make sure I get a really good lather (sulfate-free!) and believe me- it does! It helps to massage the shampoo into your scalp and it has a nice pleasant scent.

Be sure to check out your nearest professional salon to see if they carry the Awapuhi products!

This is not what you expect.....LOL

I had a huge bottle of Mane N Tail and I really don't like it. It's not bad but it's not great and therefore is a waste of my time. So I gave it away.....to the dog :) Hey, it's made for horses (an animal) so I figured using it on the dog (an animal) would be fine. So far is okay and not smelling. Anything that helps his body odor I love!

Hair Growth Aids

The fantasy world of hair growth aids and what they will do for you has fooled many of us.  Growth aids do have their place.  Some hair products do stimulate the scalp and hair follicles to produce growth.  Products that contain minoxidil like Rogaine have been proven by the FDA to grow hair where hair follicles have been dormant.  Recent university studies of Emu Oil has shown to produce hair growth.  Also, studies for apple polyphenols have been shown to grow hair.  Now for your more underground growth aids that hair forum people claim to have received astounding resuts such as: miconazole nitrate, Mega Tek, castor oil and a few others.  Even though miconazole nitrate, Megat Tek and castor oil have not been fully researched; I believe the women are getting the results they are claiming.  But a simple regular scalp massage with your finger tips can achieve growth for some women.  Hair growth aids do stimulate the scalp and follicles by getting the blood to circulate more in the scalp to receive optimal hair growth.  That's Great!

Here where we have been fooled.  Dependency on hair growth aids without any knowledge on how to maintain length as it grows.  You can put all the oils and chemical on your scalp to stimulate your follicles  to produce growth but it won't mean anything if you have the same unhealthy hair maintenace habits that keep your hair constantly damaged and breaking.  I'm just speaking from experience.  I use to constantly get hair breakage during shampooing.  I would bunch my hair when washing, then I would have a tangled mess on top of my head, then breakage and hair on the floor while I attempted to detangle.  You can't prevent all hair breakage and shedding, but you can prevent most.

I know what your thinking, I must buy this and that.  I can give you sites of women who have booty length hair and they do not use anything special.  They use mostly regular sometimes cheap products that do contain mineral oil and they showed progress with growth on a continuous basis.

What are we doing to maintain hair:
  1. Shampoo properly so that your scalp is clean but your hair isn't tangled.  Try putting your hair in 4-6 loose braids and wash in sections.  Don't bunch your hair.  Use a moisturizing shampoo.
  2. Condition your hair after washing.  I condition my hair at least once a week with a plastic cap and under a hooded dryer for at least 15-30 minutes.  Alternating between a protein conditioner and moisturizing conditioner.
  3. Moisturizing hair everyday (if you have dry hair). Focus on ends.
  4. Low maintainance hair styles.  Anything that will protect the ends of your hair and to keep you from combing and styling everyday.  Style like buns, french rolls, roller sets, braids, cornrows, even wigs.
  5. Less heat.  Try to air dry.  Use flat iron on low setting.
In conclusion, by all means use hair growth aids if that's what you want to do.  But you are going to have to change some of your habits that have been losing the growth you have gained.  Hair growth aids wont do all of the work for you.

Shampoo Day!

First thing first....I needed to file my nails. I had some little ridges that I know would have sliced right through my strands.

Prepoo: I separated my hair (with my fingers only) in four sections and applied coconut oil to the entire length, starting about 1/2 - 1 inch from my scalp. Then I braided each section. I left this on overnight. I wore a plastic cap under a hat(for going out in public) until I was ready to wash. I love hats :)
Shampoo: I shampooed once focusing on my scalp with Suave Tropical Coconut Shampoo. I used my Roots Only applicator to apply the shampoo directly on my scalp. After shampooing I noticed that my hair was a lot softer than usual. I think the coconut prepoo had a lot to do with that.

Deep Condition: I like to do an Oil Rinse after shampooing but since I am starting the Castor Oil Challenge I didn't want to overdo it with the oils so I deep conditioned with Lustrasilk Shea Butter Cholesterol that was mixed with Olive oil, Rosemary EO, and Peppermint EO.
Right now I have my hair in two braids just resting, I didn't do anything special to it.
Just apply some conditioner prior to braiding and left it alone to air dry.

Styling: I have been wanting to try this style I saw on Essence.com for a long time. I think that is will allow me to reach my scalp with oiling this week so I gave it a shot. Pics coming...

Suave Professionals Shampoo- Almond & Shea Butter

suave professionals
Back in December, I received an email from Suave asking if I wanted a free gift from them- a product from their Suave Professionals line. By being on their email list, I received this special invitation! :)

Curious to see what their Professionals line was all about, I entered and received it recently. This is what I got in the mail..

suave professionals
Their packaging talked about three of their new shampoos that contain natural ingredients. I received the product that was meant to moisturize your hair! The other two are volumizing and invigorating. I would have been happy with either of these three. They all look great!

The Almond & Shea Butter is the one I received. Formulated to moisturize, this product contains 100% natural almond and shea butter. Keep in mind that my hair is oily/normal but I used this anyway (this is meant for dry/damaged hair.) It didn't exactly clean out my oily hair/scalp the first time; but after a few more continued uses; my hair felt softer and moisturized. Definitely need to use my other shampoo for my scalp, but this is great for the rest of my hair/ends.

Oil Rinse Pictorial

Hopefully this will answer a lot of questions about this treatment. This is how I do it:

Shampoo Day~Dec 2009

My cold weather regimen calls for shampooing once a month. I have noticed a big difference this month with my hair and how moisturized it felt the entire month. So now, I am going to clean off some of this build-up and try out the shampoo portion of my regimen.
Cold Weather Shampoo Routine:
  1. Pre-poo with warmed Olive Oil
  2. Shampoo with Suave Tropical Coconut Shampoo (trying to get rid of it so I can try something new)
  3. Oil Rinse with Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil (I will be using Giovanni Triple Tea Tree Treat as the conditioner for this oil rinse)
  4. Final Rinse with cold water
  5. Protective Style

Product Review: Kairos Clarifying Complexion Clearing Shampoo and Conditioner

Last month while battling with my stubborn acne, I was using the Kairos Clarifying Complexion-Clearing shampoo and conditioner, that I received to test.

What makes this product truly unique is that the formula not only washes your hair clean and smells minty fresh, it also contains ingredients to fight acne! Of course I was curious to try this!

My hair: I have straight and fine hair and it can also be oily at times. My hair-washing habits? Every other day, because I don't want to damage my hair and I don't have the time. I never used to condition my hair as much also but I have found that it really moisturizes it even though I may think I have oily hair.

Routine: So I have used Kairos' shampoo at least twice a week and the conditioner during the other times when I don't use the shampoo. The reason why I stick with this routine is that I don't want to use salicylic acids twice on my hair. It will strip my hair dry and my hair just doesn't feel normal.

For my Overall verdict: It smells wonderful.. I'm a sucker for minty shampoos that feels invigorating on my scalp. The additional benefits of cleansing any acne is definitely a plus! Here's a true and tried tip: The shampoo can also be used, while diluted, as a face/body wash for acne during the shower. I am sticking with this shampoo while I have noticed fewer bumps or tiny zits around my forehead.

How to Pre Poo

Pre Pooing is applying oil or conditoner to your hair before shampooing.  Poo is short for shampoo.  Pre Pooing is used to protect your hair from harsh cleansers in shampoo that can cause hair dryness. Another benefit is conditioning.

There are soooo many oils, emolients, and conditioners that one could use to pre-poo their hair.  I say choose your favorite and give it a go.  There are some who pre poo with conditioners for 1-8 hours.  Then shampoo.  Then that't it.  Others will pre poo, shampoo, then deep condition.  Some use protein conditioners and other use moisturizing conditioners.  You could even add honey and glycerin to your pre poo.  There is no one right way.  I say know your hair.  Get to know what it needs at that moment.  Then choose your pre poo.  That's if you want to do it at all.  For a pre poo with conditioners, I've heard it's not good to go beyond 8 hours.

I choose to pre poo with oils only.  Well most of the time.  Sometimes I will add honey.  I make sure I use oils that penetrate the hair shaft.  Oils such as, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Emu Oil, Avocado Oil and Amla Oil. That's just to name a few.

I use a mixture Amla Oil by Garrysun.com, EV Coconut Oil, EV Olive Oil, and essential oils.  I combine them in an applicator bottle.  I use the applicator bottle to apply the oil to my scalp only.  Then I massage for at least 3 minutes.  While massaging I finger comb by hair to loosen any tangles and allow the oil to reach my ends.  I place a plastic/shower cap on my head, do housework or write posts.  I pre poo from 2-12 hours.  With oils I dont have to worry about how long the oils are left in my hair.  It's just oils.  After pre pooing I shampoo or cowash, deep condition and last moisturize.  Then back to protective styling.

Pre pooing has benefited me greatly.  It has stopped the dryness I had after shampooing.  No more dry hair means that I can retain my growth.  It has also stregthened my hair.  The Amla Oil that I use has a mass of ingredients that are known to stregthen and condition hair.

I use my pre poo mix twice a week.  On Tuesdays, when I cowash and Saturdays, when I shampoo.

Another Amla oil I am going to try next is Dabur Vatika Coconut Oil.  I cant wait to get it and use it.  I heard wonderful things about it.  It has some great ingredients and I heard there isn't any mineral oil in this one.  Garrysun.com Amla oil does not contain mineral oil either.  If you tried Dabur Vatika, give me a review of the product.

Organic or Non Sulfate Shampoo Review

Another Hair Care Product Review for Shampoo.  For some time I have been looking for a way to shampoo my hair without using harsh chemicals and sulfates.  Not that I am really searching for an all organic haircare line but I wanted something that was a little gentler on my hair during the cleansing process.  There was some buzz on youtube and some of the hair forums about using a Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile Classic Soap, oil and distilled water to shampooo the hair.

Now I was a little scared at first to try it.  But I was pleased with the results.  My hair was clean but not brittle. Most import, I did not have any tangles.  I use a mix from K.I.S.S Blog

Here is the mix:
  • 16 oz applicator bottle
  • 2 oz of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap
  • 2 oz of your favorite oil. ( I use a combination of Extra Virgin Coconut oil and Extra Virgin Oliver Oil)
  • 12 oz of distilled water.
The only negative is the mixing.  It seems that I have to mix everthing that I use on my hair.  You can buy a pack of (2) 32 oz Soaps for 29.98.  Good Deal!

I love Aubrey Organics Conditioners.  Since I have been using the conditioners with success; I thought I would try the shampoo.  I bought  Honeysuckle Rose Shampoo.  It left my hair soooo dry and matted.   If I didn't have good skills to untangle my hair, I would have had a setback.  I couldnt understand it.  I was so disappointed.  So to use up the rest of the product, I mixed in some olive oil and distilled water.  Now, I am able to get through a wash without any tangling.  This shampoo is not for me.

Conditioners, Yes!  Honey Suckle Rose Shampoo, NoWay!  And it's suppose to be for dry hair.

There are some other non sulfate shampoo's that I can't wait to try:
  • Karen's Body Beautiful Bodacious Beauty Bar (Shampoo Bar). I heard it's wonderful.
  • Aubrey Organics Island Naturals Shampoo and White Camellia Shampoo
  • Abba Pure Moisture Shampoo
  • Aveda
  • Elucence.
  • Kenra.
  • Organix Shampoo's.

Moisturizing Shampoo Review

I have decided to write a product review of a couple of shampoos that I have used for the last 2 years.  It's important for my hair to be cleansed with a shampoo that will not completely strip it from all of its natural oil and still remove dirt, excess oil and unclog pores.  Elasta QP is a wonderful moisturizing shampoo that does just that for me.  I can cleanse my hair without any tangles and my hair doesn't feel dry and brittle.  Love this stuff.

This is a very good sulfate free shampoo.

INGREDIENTS: WATER, COCAMPHOCARBOXYPROPLONATE, COCAMIDE MEA, POLYQUATERNIUM-10, GLYCOL DISTEARATRE, CITRIC ACID, DMDM HYDANTOIN, FRAGRANCE, FD&C YELLOW # 5 (C119140), FD&C YELLOW #6 (C115985), FD&C RED #40 (C116035), FD&C BLUE #1 (C142090)

If you would like to give it a try, go to L.A.D.Y STORE.

Creme of Nature Sunflower & Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo is another good shampoo that I have used.  Even though it does contain sulfates, it does not leave my hair stripped, tangled and brittle.

Some of the Ingredients: Water (Aqua) (Eau), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Stearate, Polyquaternium-10, Cocamide Dea, Amodimethicone, Polysorbate 20, Polyquaternium-7, Isostearyl Ethylimidazoliniumethosulfate, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium Edta, Cocos Nucifera (Coc ...

How I Shampoo My Hair

Washing my hair is one of the most important part of retaining and increasing my hair growth.  Washing my hair more often has done wonders for my hair but if i use the wrong techniques all of the growth and progress I have made, will go down the drain. Bye-Bye!

I use to shampoo my hair by bunching up my hair.  You know like they do in those shampoo commercials where a woman is in the shower and her hair is full of suds. (Look to the left)  She is smiling in ecstasy with her hair bunched up and full of suds.  THAT'S A NO NO! When I shampooed that way, my hair was very matted and tangled.  I would cry while trying to untangle.  That all changed when I bought a book Ultra Black Hair Growth.  I dont do everything in this book but the two things that I currently use is the method for washing my hair and Creme Moisturizer.

I wash my hair in the shower except for the day that I relax my hair.  I prepoo my hair for at least 3 hours with oil. (I'll explain my prepoo later).  I untangle my hair in sections with my fingers with my prepoo in my hair.   When in the shower I rinse with water first for 5 minutes, apply shampoo and massage my scalp.  I dont bunch my hair.  I try to keep my hair as straight as possible and I use my fingers as a comb to untangle as I shampoo.  I shampoo once, mostly.  While rinsing I use my fingers to do further untangling, making sure my hair is straight, straight, straight.

Using this shampoo method  and a good moisturizing shampoo has helped me significantly to retain any growth I have obtained.  This method works for ANY hair type.  Don't ever bunch your hair again!
