How Thoughtful! Thank you!

Earlier this week I was passed the Stylish and Versatile Blog award from Ruth at Island Potppouri and I am finally getting around passing on the award to others. First things first, THANKS for the award. I am truly flattered.

Let's get to it, here are the seven random things about me that I am sharing:

1. I LOVE shoes. I have over 100 pairs stashed in various places around the house and I wear them all. I had to stop buying shoes because I ran out of room to store them.

2. I used to wish I was 2 inches taller so that I could audition for ANTM (LOL). I was stopped by scouts twice while I was in college and that was a real confidence booster - but I decided to focus on school and but that "dream" on the back burner.

3. At this point in my life there are only two foods that I have encountered that I do not like - squash and chitterlings (gag).

4. On my bucket list I have: Visit all 50 U.S. states

5. I am fortunate to have members in my family on both sides that have traced our lineage and found out that our people (dad's side) are from Ghana and on the other side (mom's side) trace back to an Irish man and a Cherokee woman. I think that's pretty cool.

6. My hubby and I married on 08/08/08 but not for the "luck" myth - we got engaged on 08/08/07, I wanted to keep the date significant for us. Our wedding colors were our birth stone colors - Aquamarine and Sapphire.

7. I am undefeated in Wii boxing. ::waves hand in front of face:: you can't see me! :)

So now I pass the Stylish and Versatile Blog on to:

Karli at Curly Hairdo Ideas
Tia at NaturallyTia
Shones at Curly Sweet Life

So that they may share seven things about themselves to their readers. Have fun!

Happy Birthday to Me

For my birthday I decided to do my first video montage of my hair journey..... all 28 yrs, enjoy!

You can see how my hair was natural but not always healthy. The longest that my hair has ever been (to my knowledge) is reflected in my graduation photos. Currently, my hair is passing that length due to healthier practices and bunning this winter. My hair has always been growing but I was not retaining all the length. Length retention is the name of the game now.

The song I chose for the video is very motivation for those days when we are having doubt with our hair or receiving some not so nice comments/opinions from others. Just remember "man sees the outside but God sees the inside, no matter your outside, through faith he will come inside."

Check out the song in its entirety here: Ambassador - "My Clothes, My Hair"

About Me

Excuse my rudeness, where was my introduction?

Currently, I am employed full time in customer service, a full time student pursuing my master's degree in Community and Social services, and a wife. I love God, He's the center of my joy, I have a furbaby named Tyson (he's a pit but doesn't know it). In my opinion he acts more like a cat or a small lap dog.....60+lbs in your lap is not fun.

I am natural and have always been my entire 27 years on this earth. When I was younger I was influenced by many sources to feel ashamed of my curliness. As a result I wore press-n-curls consistently. When it was time to wash my hair I would hide from everyone for three days until I could get it under control. I probably would have gotten a relaxer but that was something that did not fit in our family budget at the time. I was persuaded to embrace my coils one day when my boyfriend (now husband) saw my hair on was day. He kept touching it and complimenting it and suggested that I wear curly. I took his advice, I was nervous, and have not turned back since. He has been my greatest supporter and motivator.

Not everyone is happy about my hair...mainly family. But guess what? I don't care. It's my head and my hair and I finally feel like myself. There is nothing wrong with me and "what God gave me is just fine."

Even though I have always had natural hair, I never took care of my hair properly. I used products that the relaxed girls used, I loaded my hair and scalp with hair grease, and consistently used extreme heat on my tresses. Upon discovering the many hair care sites out there I decided to start treating my hair like I it should be treated. Keeping this blog is a way to "check myself" and keep track of styles, regimens that works, and products my hair loves and hates. Now, I am finally happy with my hair.

My Hair Icon

Since I was a little girl I have always admired Kelis' style and hair, especially the hair. I loved how she was so against the grain and outside of the box. So bold to wear her hair so wild, I adored that boldness.
  • When Kelis was 13 she shaved her head completely bald
  • “Kelis does not like her hair with any product beyond a leave-in conditioner. So that is one of the reasons for her healthy hair. Everything has to be very clean and hydrating and conditioning. No greases, no silicones; just really gentle hair care” -Dickey
  • Kelis was part of the inspiration behind the haircare line Hair Rules
  • Kelis doesn’t have a relaxer
  • Kelis’s natural hair color is dark brown
  • One point during her career Kelis got frustrated that people only wanted to discuss her hair
  • Being "Bossy" means to be in control of your own life
  • Kelis loves short hair and plans on going shorter.
  • Kelis was born and raised in New York, NY
