'No Apology' needed for Cynthia Jones' fierce 'fro

A few years ago around this time I attended the Juneteenth celebration in Durham, NC. While there I spied this HUGE blonde afro standing on a hill and I couldn't stop staring. She wore the look so well. Thirty minutes after seeing this lady with the huge 'fro I watched as she walked up on stage. I thought "oh she must be someone important." Little did I know at that time that I was about to hear Cynthia Jones.

She reminds me (and you will probably read this a lot) of a gospel version of Erykah Badu. She even samples Bag Lady on one of her tracks. When I found out about Cynthia Jones it was right one time because I was wondering if any NeoSoul-like gospel artists even existed.

Cynthia Jones has actually been nominated for both Stellar and Grammy awards. She has been on tours with the likes of Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Smokie Norful. She has been busy! Later this year, she will be releasing another CD and this one will be titled Journey to Soul.

So if you haven't heard of Cynthia Jones and you are looking for some new music to add to your collection, check her out. You are just in time to get to know her music before the next album drops.

Cynthia loves motorcycles and founded the first all female motorcycle group in Raleigh NC called the Ebony Angels, she then used her love for riding motorcycles as a tool to witness to souls, founding yet another group of female Christian motorcyclists called “The Soul Patrol motorcycle ministry. Guess what else? She's a North Carolinian!!!
(Now I'm gonna be looking for her riding around on her bike, lol)

Check out the first natural hair Christian feature here: Angel Taylor
I hope to make this a monthly feature on the blog.

Antonia Carter, natural?

Could she be?
I like Antonia Carter. I love her accent and I think she is a sweetheart for trying to take care of her family. If she's natural...that will just put another plus in my book for her (because I'm biased, lol).

A few hours ago this pic was tweeted with the hashtag #keepitnatural

However following that hashtag was "lol."  What could that mean? #KanyeShrug

We all know that many celebs opt to wear weaves instead of their real hair but do we really know what is hiding under that weave? Probably not. So, what say you? Do you believe she is natural?

She's such a 'Beautiful Girl': Angel Taylor

Angel Taylor is just one of the individuals that make-up the gospel recording group Trin-i-tee 5:7 and just so happens to be a natural diva. She wears her locs beautifully and with style.

In 2008, Trin-i-tee 5:7 became the first gospel trio to have a certified platinum album "T57" (which I own and LOVE).

It was announced earlier this year that Trin-i-tee 5:7 will now become a duo. Angel will remain a member of the group.

Rihanna: Is the red Her Best Hair?

Rihanna's hair - some love it, some hate, and quite a few people just don't care. I personally love it, I think it works great for her look and her career. It's doing what it's supposed to do - draw attention. Would I do it? No. However, I am not an entertainer/celebrity. That bright color would not work in my 9-5 or skin tone but if I could, I would do something crazy - like purple.

I came across the video below and in it Rihanna actually talks about her hair color (and there is a Kodak plug - of course). What I got from it is that the reason behind the color is her career, it's LOUD. That makes sense, our careers are the reason that some of use don't go too extreme with our looks.

If I could go purple it would look kinda like this:

Not an entire head of purple - just enough to make it noticeable.

Is there an extreme look you would like to try if your life/job/beliefs,  etc allowed you to try it?

Jill Scott's official Album Cover

I love it! We all know that she cut her hair super short not too long ago but regardless, this is a fierce look - in my opinion.

What do you think, is this a win for Ms Jill Scott?

I want this look!

I happened to catch an episode of Vh1's Love & Hip Hop (I know, I know...train wreck) and I fell in love with Olivia's hair style for her event.

I want to try and "naturalize" this look and create a style inspired by Olivia's okay. The only part I am kinda questionable about is the back of the style. I think I can do it but I won't know until I try. I will be sure to post my successful or failed attempt. BTW, I will not straighten my hair to achieve this look...stay tuned.

Goapele Getting Braided

I saw this vid this morning on Alice in Nappyland and I had to share. Honestly, I have been wanting to do some Goapele inspired braids for a while now. They are so much work - maybe I will do a modified version (larger cornrows) one day.

I pray that god fills the hearts of Malinda's family with COMFORT and that they all find strength in him during this difficult time.

Lauryn Hill

Her hair is still straight:

Thoughts?

I don't want it to appear that I am "picking on" Ms. Hill, I was such a huge fan back in the day and it excites me to see her out and about and looking so relaxed. I hope all is well with her. My thoughts on her hair...She was soooooo fly with locs. The straight look makes her look very average.

Lauryn Hill

Looks like Lauryn has leaned toward rocking the straight look:

It looks like it maybe a blow out or maybe a pressing comb. IMHO, I prefer Ms. Hill with textures styles or locs. I think they bring out her beauty. However, I am so glad to see her on stage that I will take it how I can get it. We still love you Lauryn!

So, what do you think?

Work it Ms. Scott!

Check out this fly hair on Jill Scott!

I will be copying this style! I have to, I love this look.

My Hair Icon

Since I was a little girl I have always admired Kelis' style and hair, especially the hair. I loved how she was so against the grain and outside of the box. So bold to wear her hair so wild, I adored that boldness.
  • When Kelis was 13 she shaved her head completely bald
  • “Kelis does not like her hair with any product beyond a leave-in conditioner. So that is one of the reasons for her healthy hair. Everything has to be very clean and hydrating and conditioning. No greases, no silicones; just really gentle hair care” -Dickey
  • Kelis was part of the inspiration behind the haircare line Hair Rules
  • Kelis doesn’t have a relaxer
  • Kelis’s natural hair color is dark brown
  • One point during her career Kelis got frustrated that people only wanted to discuss her hair
  • Being "Bossy" means to be in control of your own life
  • Kelis loves short hair and plans on going shorter.
  • Kelis was born and raised in New York, NY
