Where do the 'God-Fearing" ladies fit in?

First, let me say that EVERYONE is welcome to this blog. I am not that type of Christian that hates anyone. It's your life you live it the way you want to and no matter what I will still love you in theway that Christ modeled love over and over again. I am NOT perfect and I have no room to judge and no right to condemn. Today I just want to do something for a particular group of commenters on the blog.

Sometimes on these natural hair blogs, vlogs, and forums I feel kind of outcast. I'm not bothered by it because I understand that by choosing not to conform to the things of this world that I am not always up-to-date on the "cool" stuff. But the purpose of this post is not to preach, it's to refer- you know the good stuff, more websites to stalk :)

So many of you leave words of appreciation on the Sunday Post that I wanted to point you in the direction of some other sites/blogs that you may be interested in.

Do Natural Hair Guru's Really Exist?

Dictionary.com defines a guru as...

I read a rant over on Lipstix Natural Chica and it got me thinking... Click here to read the rant ---> Natural Hair Rant: Oh So Now You're A Guru

So what exactly makes a "natural hair guru"? I am NOT saying that there are not any natural hair gurus out there but I do wonder if we throw that title around too loosely.  Being a guru and being knowledgeable about how to care for your own hair are very different.

There are a few that label themselves "gurus" while others have been granted that title by those that admire them and their knowledge. Are there individuals that I consider gurus? Yes. They have a vast amount of knowledge and for the things they don't know, they have established an army of resources. Being able to use what you have but admit that you don't know it all is an admirable trait, in my opinion.

What I hate seeing the most is individuals that have suffered a setback in their healthy hair journey because they followed the advice of someone that labeled themselves a "guru." For example, check out this post on BGLH about bad hair advice ---> Bad Hair Advice Worse Than The Perm

I have also suffered my own setbacks due to taking advice from an online personality that we well-versed in their own hair care but not the care of other's hair. That was my own fault but at the time I did not know any better. Also, who's to say that the guru is really telling you the COMPLETE story behind their hair health and length? I have always wondered pondered that very question.

Discussing this topic is almost like beating a dead horse. If you do a search, see that the "guru" topic is one that has been addressed on youtube, blogs, and numerous hair forums. One of my favorite posts on this topic was by CurlyNikki and it is because she stated "be your own guru." That is the best advice I can give anyone embarking on a natural hair journey.

We are here to inspire each other

Many of you may remember this style:

We I got a message from one of the HerBestHair's readers stating that she has recreated the style. I took a peek and she did a great job. Please pop on over to Diva Do's & Everything in between and let her know what you think on her Cornrow & Twist Updo.

Proverbs: 31 Chapters in 31 Days
This morning another one of my cyber buddies turned me on to a Bible reading challenge this month in which I am going to participate. I felt that is was such a good challenge that it was worth sharing.

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, divided into 31 chapters.  It covers sugjects of pride, knowledge, personal relationships, marriage, buisness, and emotions. [citation]

Happy Hump Day!

Are you moisturizing when you condition?

How well do you really know the type of conditioner that you are using? Unfortunately, the FDA does not regulate the labeling of cosmetic products as strictly as food and medications and this allows companies to make almost any claim that they please. So are you really using a moisturizing conditioner or do you need to follow-up your condition with an actual moisturizer? This information may be helpful for someone out there battling the common problem of  that dry winter hair.

Check out this article posted by Jc of The Natural Haven: Difference Between a Moisturizer and a Conditioner

What conditioner and moisturizer combo are you using this winter?

I'm using Giovanni SAS conditioner and then moisturizing with a leave-in conditioner. Since having the yarn braids I have been relying on my hair steamer for moisture. According to the article my conditioner choices are good for moisturizing my hair.

Style Search: TWA, BBA, and all lengths in between

In July 2010 I.M.I. held a giveaway that asked readers to suggest topics that they would like to see on the blog. The following topic was inspired by one of those suggestions:

When I am looking for a new style and I get stumped, I have found the that internet and a good ol' Google search can provide me with some inspirations. Recently, I have discovered Tumblr and the numerous natural hair photo blogs that are housed on that website. Here are a few that I like to browse regularly:

**** Yeah Natural Hair

Those will keep you busy for a few hours and if you start clicking around you will come across more photo blogs. Hairstyles will  not always fall into your lap, especially natural hair styles, so you must go looking for them. Happy Hairstyle Hunting.

Everyday Minerals- New website

I thought I would let my readers know that Everyday Minerals now has a new and improved (some may disagree) website! Some of the big changes in case you haven't seen it yet:
1) Community based- They are becoming more social networking friendly by having groups, photo capability and blogging for individual users. You can also "add friends" and send private messages to them. This is a bonus for people who want to contact other forum members without letting everyone know what they have to say!

2) Changes in Custom Kits- The free custom kit, the personal custom kit and the Super Custom kit are now gone.

To learn more about the kits and the controversy about the website...

The Free Custom Kits are now replaced by "Try Me Free" kits which are pre-selected kits in various shades based on light, medium, tan colors or a trio of blushes, concealers or eyeshadows. They are a bit limited but if you are new and do not own a lot of various blushes, these are a great way to try the favorites!

The Personal Custom kits (6 items for $34) is replaced with a 25% off discount of 5-11 items of full-sized products. So, this way you have more leeway in the number of items you want while getting a discount.

The Super Custom Kit (12 items for $50) is now available through a 45% off discount of 12 items or more! This is by far their best current deal because if you order more cheaper items, the price will be less. For example, a lip product costing $4 will only be $2.20 if you have 11 other full size items. Previously in the old Super Custom Kit, it would have cost an average of $4.17 ($50/12= $4.17).

Controversy-
Many customers on the forum are upset with EDM because these kits are gone, when they had said earlier in the forum that the Super Custom kit was going to stay with the new site. Frankly, I think that is unfair for them to ask a company that is obviously here to make money to lower their prices. With a new site, there are costs involved that simply do not pay for itself.

Yes, compared to the original Super Custom Kit, if you order 12 full size items for $12 each, you would have only payed $50 compared to the $79 you would pay now, even with the 45% off discount. But realistically, does a customer order always $12 items? One usually orders blushes which are $8, or eyeshadows which are $6, or even brushes which vary from $5-10. So, point is: strategically add items to your cart to maximize your value.
