Product Review: Loc Soc

This review is coming from my husband who has been wearing the Loc Soc since I purchased it for him from the NC Natural Hair Care Expo 2010 and then 2 more at the 2011 expo.

Material: Lycra fabric - 15 inches long

They say: Whether you have locs, braids, an afro or any hair that needs an added twists, the Loc Soc is the perfect hair accessory for you

He says: "It works for most part, does what its supposed to do. Easy to sleep in and gives you a lot of versatility. The one I own is blue but if it was black it would be worn more out in public. I can definitely see someone wear one as a part of an outfit because of the different ways it can be worn. Over time it gets loose but a cycle in the washer and dryer will bring it back to its original form. For someone with dreadlocks its 100% better than a du-rag. This is a product that I would buy again this time in black. My only critique would be that sleeping in the loc soc it can start to slide off once it because loose but the problem is resolves once the soc is washed and dried."

Update: My hubby now owns one in black - he's happy. :)


I bought myself a Loc Soc!

I Say: I wasn't quite sure how this would on my hair but worse case - I would give it to my Hubby if it didn't work. If you pineapple your hair to maintain a twist-out for a few days, the loc soc works great. I recently did two strand twists and usually I sleep in a bonnet and in the morning my twists are smashed and flattened. I slept in my loc soc last night and my twists look great - no flattened twists this morning. The loc soc does not fit snug around the edges so if you are looking to get smooth edges you would have to tie down your edges first and then put on the loc soc. Another plus with this product is that it comes in so many different colors that they are easy to purchase to specifically pair with an outfit.

I Say: I actually ended up with this product because Care Free Curl was sold out and I really needed a moisturizer. I assumed all "juice" was the same. I was wrong. The description of this product is true! Luster's S-Curl smells better, is thicker, and leaves my hair softer without leaving a mess on my hands when I touch my hair.  I love this product and I am sticking with it. I recommended it to my cousin and she said that she can tell a difference with her hair - she's currently transitioning.

Product Review: Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner

I purchase this product because of how much my hair LOVES shea butter and because I don't have a leave-in conditioner - it's just something I never owned. I found this at a store in my area called African Land - its the only place I have ever seen this product besides online.

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Deionized Water, Herbal Complex, Panthenol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E

They say: Penetrates deep into hair and scalp to moisturize, repair & protect. Transforms dull, lifeless hair into healty, soft,. shiny and manageable hair with extra body.

I say: Smells AWESOME. I apply onto wet hair and it leaves my hair soft and feeling moisturized. The only issue I have is that the conditioner is very thick and that makes it hard to get out of the bottle. I wish it came in a jar. On the other hand - the thickness is what makes it work so great on my hair.

06/16/2011 UPDATE:

I discovered this past weekend that this particular Shea Moisture product is from the same company that is now carried in Target. The person that informed of this actually owns a store and now searches for this version of the product to stock the shelves. The person told me the reason is because the line in Target is more watered down and is of less quality than the products before they went more commercial. 
I must say - I am disappointed. This leave-in is spectacular (to me) and I don't know what I am going to do once it is no longer available. I stock up when I can, I usually buy whats on the shelf.

I say: So, what did I think about this conditioner? I loved it! The scent reminded me of Giovanni's Triple Tea Tree Treat but the THB conditioner has a much softer scent, more slip, and left my hair feeling soft. Detangling was a breeze and after rinsing I did not feel any residue left behind from the conditioner. I have various hair types on my head and the way each section responded to the conditioner leads me to believe this conditioner would work for any hair type. However, I do wonder how well this conditioner would work as a leave-in. This product came at the perfect time because I was just about to begin my hunt for a new deep conditioner. .....Yes, I would buy this product again (and in the 32oz). :)

I say: I tried this product with heat and without heat. Without heat my hair was soft but not any softer than it is when I deep condition as normal. With heat my hair  felt soft and stronger which is what I was hoping for since this product is a protein treatment. The smell of this product is kinda citrus-like to me. I don't particular like citrus smells but it wasn't too strong and overwhelming. When using this with heat it made my hair felt hard when touched so I did not manipulate my hair until I let some water run through my hair for a few seconds. The strong feeling stayed throughout the week so this is a product that I will use again and will use only as needed.

I Say: I was a little late with trying this one because I did not want to spend money on a product that was not sure about. The ingredients sound wonderful but from the look of it I was sure what it would do for my hair. I liked that the ingredient listing was all natural and I appreciated the amount product that was in the container for $9.99. However, the scent is too strong for me and drives  me crazy. My hubby said he likes it but I think it's different when you are not the one with the scent hovering around your head. The product is also very light  and didn't do much for holding my twist outs or enhancing my curl. One thing about this product that I noticed recently is that if you use a little too much it will create an icky feeling film on the hair and scalp. I can say with 100% certainty that I will not purchase this product again.

I Say: Every winter I have dealt with an itchy dry scalp because I can't seem to keep enough moisture on my scalp and in my hair to prevent dryness. This steamer helped me A LOT. Steaming felt like the "itches" were melting away. As for the ends of my hair - they felt like cotton, so soft. That brittle feel in my crown area has improved dramatically. In the end the steamer worked great with braids and great with loose hair. Next I will try it on my hubby and his locs :)
The Con: If you have a lot of hair it can be a task to get it all to fit under the steamer. I clipped my hair up into 2-4 sections so that I could fit comfortable under the hood.

EcoTools Bath Accessories - Part 2

Have you seen these EcoTools bath accessories before? Check out more sponges, bath mitts and other exfoliating tools here in Part 1. Since it is the winter, I have been suffering with cracked heels. These tools came just in the nick of time, before Spring comes so I can be heel-ready. (Nude shoes, anyone?)

EcoTools gives you 2 options- a Brush & Foot File and a Foot File only accessory to get your feet exfoliated and flakey-free.
The EcoTools foot brush & file is my personal favorite of the two. Why? Because it gives you more choices in one handle; one side is the brush that I use first and I can even scrub around my toes and top of my feet and the other side is the file to exfoliate your heels. The Foot File only accessory has two sides also- one is more coarse to exfoliate and other is finer to smooth your heels. My personal preference is the brush one but both "file" sides worked nicely. What used to be dry rough skin is now smooth and part of my actual foot! (haha)
Tip: Remember to use a heel cream after using these tools to moisturize!

The EcoTools Facial Buff is like a mini Body Buff- 2 sides for cleaning and exfoliating. This is perfect for occasional sloughing off dead skin cells and everyday wash on the smooth side. Tip: Make sure to wet the buff entirely before placing on your face. It may be too harsh on sensitive skin. There's a mini elastic strap so you can put two of your fingers in so you don't have to hold them. They're about 2 inches wide, so they're just the right size. Overall, I found the EcoTools bath and facial accessories great to have to give that extra cleaning that your regular washcloth won't give you. Having these around your bathroom also reminds you that you need to exfoliate to get beautiful, clear skin!

In addition to these fabulous products, I bought at my local retailer, two other EcoTools products that I have been eyeing.. literally! Their Eye Mask & Moisturizing Socks are made of really soft rayon from bamboo. After scrubbing my feet, of course I have to retain its moisture by slathering on bodybutter on my heels and using these socks. The Eye Mask is great to block out any unnecessary light for a night of slumber.

I'm late but...CURLFORMERS!

I first heard about Curlformers in 2009 and the two major things that turned me off were the hook and the price. However after watching reviews on YT and reading numerous reviews on other blogs my curiosity was re-ignited. Recently, at the Triangle meet-up an opportunity arouse for me to purchase the Curlformers from another fellow curly (thanks girl!!) and finally try them out.

To begin:
My hair was co-washed on Wednesday and bunned for the rest of the week. Since my hair was properly detangled prior to bunning I did not have to do much prep work for before using the Curlformers.

The only items I used during this process were a rattail comb, curl defining spritz (setting lotion), a hooded dryer, and the Curlformers.

I sectioned my hair into four large sections and within those sections seperated some of the hair to go into the Curlformers. I applied setting lotion to each section, made sure it was spread evenly, and also ensured that the hair was detangled before pulling through the Curlformers. It took me about 1 hour to get them all in which is not bad for my first time.

I let my hair air dry in the Curlformers for as long as I could. I didn't start until late so when I began to get sleepy I pulled out the hooded dryer and sat under it for about 30 more minutes (10 minutes each on high, med, and low). All but two of the sections in the Curlformers dried. They were in the middle so I left them in overnight and slept just fine.

I am very satisfied with the outcome.

I think the trick is to let the hair dry completely. Any trace amount of moisture left after removing the Curlformers can lead to frizz (just like a roller-set).

At night I pulled the curls up into a high loose pony and put on my satin bonnet. In the morning the curls still looked great.

The only con I ran into was that some of my hair in the front sections were too long for the Curlformers and about 1 inch of hair was hanging out of the bottom. The next time I visit Sally's I will pick up a pack of the extra long Curlformers. Also, the salon kit was just the right amount for all this hair on my head. PERFECT!

I Say: I love the smell of HE HH and it has amazing slip! The conditioner is thick and creamy and perfect for me to use during the dry winter season. After using my last bottle I did not purchase another on because I decided that I wanted to use all natural and organic products on my hair because they tend to yield the best results for my hair. However, I have yet to come across an affordable conditioner that moisturized and gave me the slip I desired similar to the slip I get with HE HH. I turned my back on this product once and more than likely I will not turn my back on it again. I am very satisfied with this product and the job that it does on my hair.

Drugstore Find: Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark-Circle Roller Review

Have you tried the Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Dark-Circle Roller? Whew, long name ! It's an eye care product & concealer all in one! I've been looking for a great product for a while that can moisturize my bags under my eyes as well as conceals it. I've been using my concealer- mineral makeup- for some time but haven't found anything moisturizing, except eye cream. This is the perfect combination. The roller really cools it and instantly I feel a difference. The one thing I don't like is that I can't keep rolling it around b/c the tint will keep coming out and I don't want it to look too cakey.. I may have to get the regular one (in the green bottle) too!

Tip: Do not wear this at night.. the caffeine will give you a jolt that will not be good in the morning.

I Say: The smell was nice and it left a pleasant scent on my hair. However, it was a fight getting the product out of the bottle. Maybe it would be better packaged in a jar or an easier to squeeze bottle. Before purchasing I read a ton of rave reviews about the product so I was ready to be "wowed." But, I wasn't. This conditioner did not give me amazingly great results. The moisture factor was just okay and there was very little slip with this product. I purchased this conditioner because I was looking for an all natural/mostly natural hair conditioner. AOHR is not the one for me and I do not plan on purchasing this product again.

Review: One Bath and Body - Shampoo & Conditioner Bar

Have you ever stood inside your bathroom and thought about all the plastic you're using & wasting with the number of bottles you have? How about the number of products you have used so far and will use in your lifetime? The number is quite frightening...

To be eco-friendly, how about trading in 3 bottles of shampoo for one tiny bar of One's Shampoo bar? According to One Bath and Body, that's exactly how many uses you can get from a bar- 3.5 inches in diameter and an inch and a half in height. You only have to use a few swipes on your hair and you're all good. To prevent the bar from melting away, each one comes with an embossed aluminum shower tin (with holes!) so the water will drain out.

I was sent the Hair Biscuit for Yummy Hair (an orange-yellowish bar) to try and Hair Boost solid conditioner. The first thing I noticed was that they were really fragrant. If you've sensitive noses, I would not recommend. But if you like strong aromatic scents, this is perfect for you! It makes my entire bathroom smell like I'm at a spa... Since my hair is my fine and tends to get oily, I have to make sure I don't use products that make my hair even oilier. Otherwise, it will feel like its being weighed down which is unpleasant.

I have been using this for a few weeks and I have finally found my perfect methodology of using these two bars. First, my hair cannot use both shampoo bar and the conditioner bar. Unfortunately the combo weighs my hair down. Instead, I use the shampoo bar only and my hair feels thicker and more volumized- which is super! I only use the conditioner bar on my ends every 2-3 washes and my hair ends feel much more manageable. Wahoo!

There are lots more products in the One Bath and Body line- which also uses recyclable packaging- to make their products even more eco-friendly. Some other items on my wishlist include their Natural Soaps and Lotions! :)

I Say: This conditioner is thick, creamy, and smells wonderful! I love it. The last few times that I have used this conditioner my hair has been extremely soft the next day. Great detangling conditioner! The only bad thing I can think of is that this particular conditioner is not found everywhere. I found it in my local grocery store but I have not seen it anywhere else.

I Say: I like this product so much I have already ordered another jar and I have not even used up the first one! The first jar was a gift but that has no impact on this review. A good product is a good product period. At first I thought the citrus smell would be too much for me but it does not stay strong while on your hair, it just leaves a light and pleasant scent. I have used this on wet hair, dry hair, and my hubby's locs and I have been satisfied with every application - especially my hubby's locs. With this butter a little goes a long way so one jar will last a good while, I like that! Another plus, it can be used on the skin. I have not done a skin application yet but it does leave my hands soft after styling.

No need to say that I will purchase again... because I already have.

I say: It was easy to apply and had a non-sticky consistency like most gels I have used in the past. On the first application I applied the product to damp hair as the direction instruct. I did not have as much shrinkage as I normally have. However, once dry my curls were hard and crunchy. They still looked soft but I didn't like the feel. So, I gave Gel-les 'c a second chance on dry hair. It really didn't do anything. It was like putting nothing on my hair. I will not be purchasing the full sized product. I will say that it only takes a little of Gel-les 'c so this product has the potential to go a long way.

While browsing through Wal-Mart I picked up this product because it was close to another conditioner I was buying and the bottle is one of my favorite colors :)

Product Review: Hair Stopper

This thing is saving the Earth!! I shed A LOT so after washing my hair is the shower the tub was always clogged. I used to purchase Drano like I purchased conditioner because I needed it just that much. One day while shopping in Walmart (for conditioner) I saw this product on the end of the aisle. For $3 I decided that I could give it a try.

I can honestly say that I am so glad I made this purchase. I have not used Drano since! Woot Woot!

The only downfall is that cleaning it grosses me out. Yea, it's my hair but still....yuck. So I like to let it dry completely and then remove the hair - in my mind it's less gross that way, LOL.

I like it and if something happens to it, I will buy it again.

Product Review: Aloe Gro

This is long overdue

I came across the YouTube video for this mix on one of my hair watching days.

Ingredients: Organic aloe vera gel (1.5 cups) , water (1 cup), sage essential oil (6 drops), peppermint essential oil (10 drops), eucalyptus essential oil (5 drops)

They say: "Makes your hair grow like wildfire"

I say: I'm not sold on the growth factor - this may have something to do with me applying the mixture mainly to my ends. This mix is a great moisturizer for the hair. I used it on my hair and my hubby's hair; it left both of us feeling refreshed and softer.

Will I use it again: Yes. This will be my cold weather staple moisturizer.

Product Review: Dabur Jasmine Hair Oil

The description of this product made it sound enticing and everything that I had ever smelled that was scented with Jasmine was always nice. I decided to give it a shot.

Ingredients: Paraffinum Liquidum, Cotton Seed Oil, t-Butyl Hydroquinone, Fragrance; Colors: Yellow No. 10 & Red No. 17

They say: Nourishes hair while providing a rich silky feel and a delightful fragrance of Jasmine flowers

I say: The scent is STRONG. There is no way I could use this on a day in which I could not open up the windows in the house. It works great as a pre-poo and helped my hair stay soft after shampooing. I probably won't purchase again solely because of the strong smell. Days later after the scent has faded what remains is a nice soft fragrance.
