SELF Workout in the Park- Recap 2010

This year is the third time I have participated in New York City's SELF Workout in the Park. Located at Central Park, this workout event brought women from all over the city to do one thing- workout! Similar to previous year's setup, there were booths around the main stage, and three areas- Quiet Zone for yoga/pilates/mat instructions, Main Stage for the large group workout, and the Rebound Zone- for Urban and Resistance Rebounding (aka. workout on a trampoline!)

Check out the 2009 SELF Workout in the Park recap here to compare.

Enjoy the pictures! Some of the booth sponsors worth mentioning are:
- SOYJOY- tons of Blueberry SOYJOY bars were sampled by the crowd
- Garnier Nutrisse- with makeup & hair consultations, and a Prize Wheel giveaway. You could either win a hair product or something special- like a Yoga Mat (Which I won!)
-Aerie F.I.T.- workout tanks, shorts, pants, etc. were on sale! Most were $20-$30- a great discount of their normal prices.
-SILK- gave away lots of SILK soy chocolate milk- yum!
-iVillage- giving away resistance bands- exclusive workout on their website! (have to check that out soon!)
-Asics- gave out hair-ties in a ball!

This is the main stage. A class hasn't started yet, but people are reserving their spots in front!

This is either the Sexy Stretch class or Masala Bhangra- either way, it was packed!

Look how crowded it was! There were hundreds of people!

People checking out the booths.. this was before it got really crowded and there were actually open space.

One of the best workouts, I have ever tried is Urban Rebounding. Thinking of getting a mini trampoline for this summer.. what do you think?

The Quiet Zone.. ommmm. :)

SELF Workout in the Park 2009- Updates

I went to this year's SELF Workout in the Park, like I said I would in my earlier post (read here). It was just as fun and crowded as I expected since it was similar to last year's event. This time, I was only there for two hours but I had a good workout- urban rebounding, see below, and scored some nice goodies, which I will post pictures later.

I am overall very pleased that I spent a Saturday morning/early afternoon at the Central Park because 1) it is gorgeous and 2) it is great to see so many people motivated to work out and stay healthy! They also limited the number of tickets to the event, so it wasn't as crowded as last year. I was able to stand in line and actually get somewhere. There were noticeably fewer sponsors and giveaways this year and they actually had a booth where they were selling food/snacks/sandwiches. That was pretty empty since people were snacking on their free Smart Food snacks and protein bars.

The picture on the left is of the main stage, where the main aerobic workouts were. You can see the huge crowd in front of the stage, which did not leave much room for the booths that were on the opposite side of the stage. The picture you see on the right is a booth that was on the right side of the stage, there weren't too many people interested in this one as you can see I was able to take a good photo without any problem. There was a long line next to this since they were having a "Spin the Wheel" contest.

This is another picture of the main stage but the view is from the entrance. It's hard to see but there are some dancers right now on stage and I believe this is for the third segment called Rock Bottom, an intense lower body workout. The other picture on the right is of mini trampolines. This is a spectacular workout for the class, Urban Rebounding. It's a non-impact, cardio workout where you're basically bouncing up and down on the trampoline and doing some kicks and jumping jacks moves for 20 minutes! My lower abs definitely felt it the next couple of days.

I'm looking forward to next year's SELF Workout in the Park!!

SELF Workout in the Park 2009

SELF magazine is hosting their annual Workout in the Park again in Chicago, New York and San Diego. If you're fortunate enough to live near one of these cities and are able to attend, then I would recommend going. I went to the one in NYC last year and it was a blast! There were tons of ladies and a few gentlemen there who were working out and doing yoga/pilates in the Quiet zone. No previous post available since I started my blog a month after I attended. :)

San Diego- April 25, 2009
New York City- May 9, 2000
Chicago- May, 16 2009

Special guest, Jillian Michaels from NBC's The Biggest Loser, was there (she will be in Chicago this time around) for a meet and greet. We stood in line for almost an hour but it was well worth it! We got to hear her fitness tips, get her autograph and take a picture with her.

The set-up in NYC was constructed to have the sponsor booths placed around the main workout floor/stage and the quiet area behind all the chaos. Since it had rained the day before and I didn't bring my mat so I didn't participate in the Quiet Zone.

Sponsors last year included Physicians Formula (with giveaways, read here) and Asics (giving away workout towels). This year, among the sponsors, we have beauty giants such as Maybelline, Garnier, and Elizabeth Arden. The site doesn't say what goodies/freebies they will be offering, but last year the May issue of SELF magazine promoted them ahead of time by using the "Bring in this ad to the booth" methodology. I didn't see any of this in the current issue, except sponsoring ads encouraging us to check out their booths. I do remember Blue Diamond naturals saying that there will be free samples of almonds/nuts there.

To purchase your tickets for only $15 (recession-friendly pricing) which includes admission AND a one-year subscription to SELF magazine (already a $10 value),
