Simple Skincare: Kind To Skin Moisturising Facial Wash

simple UK skincare
Looking for a simple kind of skincare? I recently tested the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Moisturising Facial Wash. Simple Skincare is a UK based brand whose products are aimed to simplify your facial skincare needs. They even have an expert panel where you can chat with them live on their site here.

It's still brutally cold out here, so I was looking forward to test a product with moisturizing, beneficial ingredients for sensitive skin. This cleanser contains vital vitamins such as Pro-vitamin B5, Vitamin E, and Bisabolol to help improve the overall complexion by smoothing, soothing and calming your skin.

For the past year, my skin has been almost breakout-free. I have gone through many ups and downs with my skin, trying different regimens to get clear skin. I have been consistently taking good care of my skin by washing every morning & night and moisturizing almost daily. :) I get a few breakouts here and there but nothing crazy which is good! But I'm always looking for a product that combats my oiliness, moisturizes and brightens!

My thoughts on Simple? This is a keeper! I found the facial wash to work quite well on my combination skin. This clear gel doesn't dry out my skin which is what I look for, especially in the winter. I also like that it leaves my skin feeling clean, fresh with a nice scent too. It's a 100% soap free and very gentle. If you're looking for a no-fuss facial wash that is plain simple, check this out!

Where to find this? They have a range of products available in Duane Reade drugstores in NYC as well as their website at http://www.simple.co.uk

Summer Skincare Routine with Somme Institute

At the Beauty.com Summer Stock-up back in May, I met with the PRESIDENT of Somme Institute to talk about their line of skincare products. I have never heard of them prior to the event, so I was intrigued about their research and what they had to offer to develop their skincare products. They offer a revolutionary 5 Step Regimen which is a 5 step process using their proprietary research to help you get the best skin possible. Best of all these products are made for all skin types, and most skin problems (acne/sun damage/wrinkles/discoloration/etc.)

While chatting with Michele, President of Somme Institute, she pointed out my skin flaws- oiliness and acne. I also have light acne scarring that wouldn't go away. She explained how the MDT5 technology formulation in their products will help improve the texture of my skin. She offered samples to me which I immediately tried and loved it (esp. Step 2: Transport) when I got home. I was offered the chance to try these 5-Step Regimen for the course of June to review further.

My review of each step of Somme Institute's 5-Step Regimen:
Step 1: Nourishing Cleanser (non-foaming/non-irritating) - a milky white cleanser that comes in a pump. One pump is good enough for your entire face. Left my skin feeling clean and smooth afterwards.
Step 2: Transport (gentle exfoliant)- a thin circular cotton pad that acts like a toner but is meant to exfoliate and unclog pores. I usually use this only at night. These transport pads really shrink acne (See my Transport Test below.)
Step 3: Serum (with Vitamin C)- this orange-y clear serum contains a high concentration of Vit. C to smooth fine lines. It leaves my skin feeling a bit sticky so I only use a tiny drop during the day but more at night so it feels like a mask. I have used this serum by itself and in the morning my skin looks brighter, like its glowing. :)
Step 4: A-Bomb (moisturizer with Vitamins A and E)- This is a great moisturizer by itself, but by the time I use this after the Serum, my face feels gloopy. I apply a very thin layer during the day and more at night.
Step 5: Double Defense (SPF 30+)- Unfortunately when I tried the sample, I was allergic to this product. (My super sensitive skin does not tolerate SPF chemical products) So instead of the 5-Step, I have been using the 4-Step.

It was important that while using this skincare routine, I could only use this and no other products on my face. I shelved away the cleansers/moisturizers that I had on my counter and bid adieu. (I cheated a bit though and used my Surf-vival facestick for SPF protection!) I was careful to strictly follow the 4-Step (sometimes I used a bit less of each though) daily. With the summer heat though, my skin would get oily during the day and I got .. sweat zits. :(

Transport Test- When it's hot and humid, especially when it roared into the 100 degree weather last week in July, I was faced with uninviting acne. My skin that was getting better was no longer looking clear... To test the effects of Step 2: Transport, I decided to use just that product after not using anything (except the cleanser) for a few days. After Day 3, I used the Transport and my acne reduced significantly in size. Another day later, and it was just a tiny bump. Hoorah!

Final Thoughts- My skin is glowing- no more dull complexion! Since my main problem areas are redness in my cheeks and the occasional blemishes, it was important to test how this routine combated these issues. I've only been using this for a bit more than a month now, but I am liking the results! I've never been able to stick with a full skincare routine partially b/c I haven't found the right products that go well together but I am definitely going to stick with this until I run out.

Interested in trying the Somme Institute 5-Step Regimen? Purchase the Pillow Pack (Sample sizes exclusively at Beauty.com here) or the Travel Kit here.

Beauty.com is also having a deal- get the Neck cream FREE with any $99 purchase of Somme Institute products (while offer lasts!)

In addition, to the 5-Step regimen, I tried the eye and neck cream. I was very pleased with both products, esp. the eye cream! Review coming soon!

I love shea butter!!

I get asked about my skin a lot so here's a post about it. My skin care regimen is more simple than my hair care regimen. I wash nightly with Dudu Osun African Black Soap and then apply 100% raw African shea butter. Yes, I go to bed greasy and no this does not cause me to breakout. In the morning I wash my face with Aveeno Oatmeal soap and moisture with Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing lotion. Those are the only products that touch my face and I haven't had a breakout in years. There is no reason why I use one soap in the morning and the other at night - it is purely based on convenience. I have alternated them without a problem.

Guess who else uses Shea Butter on her face?
You have to admit...her skin is awesome!
Elle: You must be doing something, though. When I saw you at the Women in Hollywood Awards last month, your skin glowed like nothing else. What products do you use?
Amber Rose: Thank you so much! I’ve always been good about moisturizing. Every morning and every night, everyday. What I do, and this sounds kind of weird, but I buy these pint-size containers of raw African shea butter from street vendors, I microwave it, and after I shower, I rub it everywhere. Even on my scalp and face. Nothing works better. And it’s cheap!

Ashy Elbows?

Well at least one ashy elbow.  My left one to be exact.  I was lotioning myself after showering.  Which some call "greasing yourself down" and low and behold my left elbow was ashy and crusty.  It appeared somewhat scabby I was embarassed and no one saw it but me.  That is sooo not cute.  It looked like I used my left elbow to ground corn.  I looked at my right elbow and it was normal.  It puzzled me.  How could one elbow be so ashy and crusty and the other perfectly normal.  If you know me personally, don't try to get a sneak peak at my ashy left elbow.  I'll elbow you.  Just kidding, maybe. LOL!

New Identified Syndrome:
I found the problem.  Blogging!  Yes blogging gave my left elbow a crusty syndrome.  Well not blogging, but the amount of hours in front of the computer throughout the day.  My job, bills, conversations and blog take place at a desk.  And when I sit at any desk, I put my left elbow on the desk and prop my face up on my hand.  I can keep it there for hours.  So I am naming it unofficially Blogging Syndrome.  Why not.  Look at television.  There is a syndrome for everything.  Even if you sit too long and your legs fall asleep they have a syndrome for that.  So here's a new one.  Blogging Syndrome is too many hours in front of the computer for whatever reason that leads to ashy elbows.

Cure:
I will have to pay more care to not place my elbows on the desk in the future.  I am using an exfoliating wash clothe to slough off dead skin cells, emu oil to heal the damage and last Ambi to lighten the skin.  Hopefully this will work and my elbow returned back to normal.

Look at your elbows.  Are they ashy?  If so, you may have Blogging Syndrome.  I wish I had a pill to cure it.  But then I would have to list a bunch of side effects in small print that are worse than the actual syndrome.

Exfoliate Skin With Gigi Organics Gentle Face Polish

I bought Gigi Organics Gentle Face Polish and other organic products for my skin in October.  I think the product is good.  It didn't do any harm.  The best thing is that this face polish gave my skin a glow and smooths out my skin tone.  It's excellent at sloughing off dead skin cells to bring out a youthful appearance.  The only draw back is that it could be a little gentler.  Or it could be me.  Maybe I'm too rough with my skin.  So  I will finish this product and look for something a little gentler.  But it was okay.

The product claims to exfoliate and renew skin with all-natural exfoliating power of walnut and soothing benefits of Aloe Vera.  I think they need to work on the gentle part a little more.  Dont get me wrong, it didnt cause pain or irritation.

Are you exfoliating?  What kind of exfoliater are you using?

I was in Target and saw a products by Bontanics.  May give them a try.

Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash Review

In October, I bought Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash.  I heard continuous positive opinions about the face wash.  The face is organic and eco-friendly.  It's not expensive.  Lastly, It does a very good job at cleansing.  Yes, I am surprised.  I would always use facial washes with salicylic acid to control acne.  I use to use Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub.  I have nothing against this facial wash.  It worked wonderful for me.  It exfoliated and kept away pimples.  But I wanted to know if I could use a facial wash that would clear up my skin without using salicylic acid and still have the same benefits.

So, I tried the Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash and my face was squeaky clean but not dry.  I had two pimples on my left cheek from random breakouts and this facial wash completely cleared up my skin.  Yup,without any Salicylic Acid or other harsh chemicals.  Tea Tree oil is an ingredient in the facial wash and the antibacterial properties of Tea Trea oil maybe keeping pimples at bay.

Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash Ingredients:
Castile Soap, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Organic Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) Root Extract, Hedychium Coronarium (Awapuhi) Root Extract, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Cymbopogon Martini (Palmarosa) Oil, Citrus Reticulata (Petitgrain) Leaf Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil.

I am very pleased with this facial wash and will be continuing with it.  Well at least until something even better in price and quality comes along.

Skin Care Updates- Tips to Reduce Acne Scars

The week after my review on the SensiClear Acne Treatment kit, my skin has been cooperating and acne-free, for the most part. All I have left are battle scars. I thought this day would never come especially since I've had this for a few months. I still cannot figure out the cause- I have not changed any of my eating, sleeping, etc. habits. I have not tried new products on that area of my face that would have caused this. It was probably stress, but it's over! YAY!

So back to the battle scars.. I decided to change my routine just a bit this week. I am only concentrating the use of SensiClear on problem areas and skipping a few steps ^_^ (mostly toner). In lieu of toner, after cleansing I am using a moisturizer! My skin feels a bit dry and tight especially since it is getting colder so using a moisturizer this past week before putting on any acne treatment, has helped tremendously.

Yes to Carrots (YTC) Facial Hydrating Lotion- Given a sample of this product from Yes to Carrots earlier this year in April, (see YTC product sampling here), I did not fully appreciate this lotion until now. I thought since my skin is so oily/combo I wouldn't need moisture but that is actually false. After cleansing can be too drying for your skin, so your skin will actually produce more oil to compensate. So I'm still using the other sample and it's been great!! Will be picking up one of these when I can find it at a drugstore..

To learn about my all-natural remedy..
Honey- It's not a brand, it's just plain old honey you may have in your fridge. I've been using this since October actually to see if it helps. I have seen a slight improvement in the fading process, I think. If not, at least it's all natural so it doesn't hurt to have the yummy goodness of honey on your face anyway. Caution- It's sticky so tie your back and do not eat this off of your face afterwards! (Can you say ew?)

Look at the Organic Skin Care Products I Bought Today

I bought some new skin care products.  I'm making some changes to my skin care regimen.  I told you a product haul was coming. Look at my other post about my skin care producs, here. I bought all organic products.  I am now having more trouble with my skin than my hair.  My hair is behaving quite well these days.  It seem that I am trying to go organic for my skin.  To be honest, not on purpose.  It's just some products that I am constantly hearing good things about.  Anywho, here we go....

I have been asking around and looking on the internet for info about skin health.  A lady at church was talking coincidentally commenting about her dry skin and said that she is now using Desert Essence Organics Body Lotions at the VitaminShoppe.  She advised me that her dry skin problems are over. So I found Vanilla Chai Hand Body Lotion and Coconut Hand and Body Lotion.  They smell yummy.  I tried the Coconut Body Lotion today.  My skin felt like butter.  Butter I tell you.  So I am switching lotions.  Laying Aveeno Body Lotion to rest.  I still like Aveeno but I think I found my staple body lotion.  These lotions claim to be Organic.   I found other Organic Lotions at the Vitamin Shoppe but they smell yucky.

Some Ingredients for Coconut Body Lotion: Aqueous Infusion of Certified Organic Extracts :Passiflora Edulis(Passionflower) Fruit 1, and Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Hibiscus Flower) 1, Certified Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil2, Certified Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil2, Glycerin*, Certified Organic Cocos Nucifera(Coconut ) Oil2, Proprietary Blend of Essential Oils, Glyceryl Stearate*, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax*, Emulsifying Wax*, Stearic Acid*, Sodium Hydroxide, Carbomer, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Po

I also found a Gentle Face Polish.  I was using Clearasil Ultra Deep Pore Cleansing Pads.  Remember how I complained that the pads irritated my skin.  So I am switching to GIGI Organics Gentle Face Polish.  I'm suppose to use this 2 times a week after my facial wash to cleanse my skin.  This will gently exfoliate my skin.  Skin exfoliation is needed to slough off dead skin cells, diminish wrinkles and revitalize complexion.   This product claims to be organic.  It has a host of ingredien that I do not feel like typing.  Sorry.

Lastly, Desert Essence Thoroughly Thoroughly Clean Face.  Love this face wash.  It did not dry my skin. Also it has tea tree oil  in it.  Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic.  So no more Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub.  I love my Clean & Clear.  Will always love it but want to try this and finish the bottle.  I bought 32oz so it's gonna be a while before I try another facial wash.  I read a few reviews that this product clears up acne and doesn't leave your face dry.

For a body wash I am going to use the Dr. Bronner's Mixture.  I was reading an account that a women's husband used it by accident as a body wash.  He loved it.  Now the whole family uses it.   It's cleansing, it been done before with no side effects and it's ecofriendly.  Why not!

If you tried any of the above products, advise me of your experience with them.

Perricone Cold Plasma Giveaway

Hello Divas!

I hope your weekend was a blast! It is officially cold in Atlanta....brrrrr! Time to break out the Uggs.

Dr. Perricone is known for his anti-aging skincare products. He has been a frequent guest on Oprah and women swear by his products. In fact, my friend funkidivagirl has flawless skin and she uses Dr. Perricone's PerriconeMD skincare line.

Recently, Dr. Perricone created a new revolutionary skincare product called Cold Plasma. Cold Plasma is a universal skin care product that claims to work with every skin type! As stated on Perricone MD's website "Cold Plasma works through a patented ionic suspension carrier system which allows for your skin to extract from Cold Plasma’s formula according to your individual, unique needs."

Also this cream is proven to improve your skin's firmness, elasticity, clarity, radiance, wrinkles, dryness and skin tone. It sounds like a winner to me! A 1 fluid ounce of this product retails for $150! Ouch! However, the kind people at PerrconeMD are giving away a full size sample of this product to one lucky Luxetips reader. Whoohoo!

Simply leave a comment on this post stating why you feel you will benefit from using Perricone's Cold Plasma. The Cold Plasma Contest starts today and will end next Friday, October 30 at Midnight!

Good luck and Toodles!

What I Need To Avoid In Skin Care Products

Soooo, I have been doing some research about my skin.  I still dont know which products are best for me but I found out what chemicals to avoid.  Which are some of the same chemicals that I should avoid in my hair products.  Duh!  Why didn't I figure this out before?  If its not good for my hair and scalp; I definitely shouldn't put it on the rest of me.  All a learning process.
So here's a list of items I should avoid in my skin care products.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfates, Ammonium Lauryl Sufates, all sulfates (Sulfates are harsh cleansers. Dry the Skin)
  • Mineral Oil (Clogs pores and causes acne)
  • Petroleum (Clogs pores and causes acne)
  • Waxes (paraffin) (Clogs pores and causes acne)
  • Dioxane ( A bad derivative of Coconut oil. May cause cancer) What!!!!
  • Parabens (Of course, but how many products out there without parabens. But from my personal research Parabens can cause rashes and disrupt endocrine system)
  • Alcohols (benzyl alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, SD alcohol and methanol. They cause SKIN DRYNESS)
  • Added Frangrances (They cause SKIN DRYNESS and contain harmful chemicals)
No wonder my skin has been dry and acne prone.  Take out one of your skin care products and do a search on some of those technical ingredients. That's what I did along with reading a million articles. Click on this website - Cosmeticsdatabase

Can I really find products without and of the above ingredients at a decent price?  I know there are products out there but expensive and you need another job just to fund your beauty products.  To be honest, I still use hair products with some of the above ingredients.  I will try to find products that don't have at least sulfates, mineral oil, petroleum, or alchols. We'll see.

So far while doing research I found one product that looks good BeeYummy Skinfoods Face Moisturizer.  I ordered a sample for under $3.  I will do a product review once I try it.

I guess I am going to have to change every skin product I own.  I feel a product overhaul coming.

My Skin Care Regimen So Far

My skin care has been a never ending battle that I am determined to win.  I took some pictures to let you see the condition of my skin but the camera ran out of battery power and I did not feel like going to the store.

So, I will describe my skin.  I do not have many blemishes but they are there.  You know the blemishes we may get here and there for whatever reason. But my real issue is skin dryness from head to toe. I get dry as toast at times.  Dry toast with no jelly!  Blurb from My Big Fat Greek Wedding.  But anywho, that's not cute.  I am just starting on my journey for healthier skin today.  I have no clue what to do.  So here is my current skin care regimen and a mini product review.

My skincare regimen for my face is as follows.  For my face I use Clean and Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub. I dont have blackheads but I like how it exfoliates my skin.  I follow up with Clearasil Ultra Deep Pore Cleansing Pads.  The pore cleansing pads help with any breakout but it causes my skin to be dry.  So my only solution is to use the pads.  I let the solution stay on my face for 2 minutes; then i do a quick rinse.  If i keep it on my face I will have a burning sensation.  Last, I moisturize.  I use Avalon Organics Cellular Renewing CoQ10 Enzyme Skin Care. This is my winter daytime moisturizer.  In the summer, I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF15.  I have two nighttime moisturizers. The first is Reviva Labs Collagen Night Cream.  The second is Elastin & DMAE Night Cream.  I alternate these two every two weeks.  The only product that I am completely pleased with for my face is the Avalon Organics CoQ10 Enzyme Skin Care.  The others...... I'm not too sure about the ingredients and if they benefit the health of my skin.

I have a simple skin care regimen for my body.  I am using Aveeno for moisturizing after showers.  I am not completely satisfied with Aveeno but so far it has been better than any other brand I have tried.  By the way Aveeno works very well for my daughter.  This year I learned a technique to get my hair in shape by moisturizing then sealing.  Maybe moisturizing and sealing will work for my skin too.  (Moisturizing is using a water based product. Sealing is putting an oil on top of moisturizer to seal in moisture.  We'll get into that later.)  But Aha, it may work!

At this point, I am on a search for the right products and a new regimen.  Just another area that I am going to have to change my thinking.  I'm thinking about visiting a dermatologist.  We'll see.  What ever happened to the days when yo mama would slap vaseline on your face and body and you would go to school shining like a lightbulb.  Tune is soon.  I'll get those skin pictures and let you know what products I have found.

I am not an expert.  Im just on a mission to get my skin in order.

Skin Renew Awakening Face Massager:

After trying this out for two weeks, I have seen an improvement in my skin's smoothness. It also looks a bit tighter, especially around the cheeks. I felt there was too much gel coming out while I used the rolling applicator. So if this happens to you, you will just have to massage the rest in your skin with your fingers. After using, you may you may have to massage the rest in your skin. Although my skin felt like it had a bit of a residue (probably because there was too much on my skin to begin with), I like how it has made my skin look brighter. So, I will definitely continue using this!
